FISH 133 (3) Aquatic Plant and Algae Ecology and Culture
An introduction to aquatic botany including the ecology, physiology, and taxonomy of marine and fresh water macrophytes. In addition the culture of seaweeds emphasizing Canadian species will be examined.
This course reviews the taxonomy of common marine and fresh water algae and aquatic plants with emphasis on their ecology and physiological adaptations. In addition, the culture of seaweeds and microalgae will be explored. The lab component focuses on a practical approach to classification and scientific exploration of various physiological (e.g., chlorophyll abundance, growth) and ecological (e.g., zonation, diversity) features of algae, including training in scientific technical writing.
